ok ..I got stupid and took my truck out in the field to play..and found out it has one wheel drive..at one end or the other .open diff's I think it's called .so..can I get a posi or locker for a timkin axle ?? as mine are stock ..or should I give in and not destroy the vintage axles and install late model axles and lose the originality of the truck..I already have a dana 44 front on the shelf.. a rear should be an easy swap..but...right now it is 95 % stock ..it's not a show truck and never will be,,
Ken - I don't see any way to convert your Timkens to LSDs. Swapping in other axles is possible, especially at the rear. On the front you'll have an issue making sure the old drag link lines up with the axle's steering arm. Plus, you've now gone to the expense of having those 19.5s made with the 6 x 7.25" pattern. You'll never find donor axles with LSDs having that wheel bolt pattern. Stu
one more reason I am sitting on the fence..new 19.5s on the rear..stocton is starting up again..and my younger brother has a suzuki that had to pull me out ..clay and street tires are a good way to learn humility....so ..stay with the Timkins ..and outa the field and keep her stock , you think..??
so that's 2 for keeping her stock... maybe I should put a winch on her .so she can haul herself outa the mud..not a lot of choice in off road tires in 19.5...
I'm actually extraordinarily surprised that these trucks didn't have some kind of locking or limited slip diff.....at the very least an option. But no. ...You can't possibly tell me that those old farm roads didn't get muddy as hell.
Um-hum ?
Limited slip and especially locking differentials and especially early locking differentials work great until that greasy corner comes up (fast) and things don’t steer quite the way they should, actually they don’t steer at all, straight ahead into the rhubarb!
