weird noise from engine area

I have a weird noise coming from the engine area of my 2000 f350 srw 4x4 150,000 mile truck. It makes a popping noise very similiar to a gas engine popping through the carburetor. It does not do it all the time. The engine appears to be running normally and no lights have come on in the dash.Any ideas? thanks

Is it doing it at idle (while parked) or at speed while driving? Could sound like it is from the engine bay but actually from the suspension below.

It happens while driving, more often when I let off the accelerator. It may not happen for an hour of driving then it will carry on for ten seconds. Kind of like a popping or loud tick from the underside. The motor seems to be running good. Any more help would be appreciated. We are getting ready for a vacation and were going to drive the truck. Thanks

wouldn`t a bent push rod make the noise all the time? I just drove it 15 miles round trip and it didn`t make a noise. But it will do it again that is what`s really wierd about it.

Have you climbed under the truck near the motor compartment area at all and checked things out ?? Not so much ticking but I had clunking noises and it turned out to be my swaybar bushings. Does it do it more on bumpy roads?? As for the ticking, any soot around the exhaust manifolds?? If you got a ticking theres a chance you might have an exhaust leak.

Slip yoke

Have you ever greased your slip yoke? Almost sounds like it is banging when you take the load off of it, easy fix, and it is common.

Could be an exhaust leak, but it's impossible to diagnose with that little info, I would look for soot tracks on the up tubes , check manifold bolts ect....
