So I went to pep boys yesterday to get my front end completely checked out after dealing with some serious wobble around corners.
The end result is they said that everything in the front end was worn. They want me to replace all Ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar, and basically every other linkage there is that deals with the way the truck handles.
Needless to say I will be doing this myself in my cousins shop to save money.
I was wondering if others who have done this can post parts they used. I have heard of grease-able ball joints that are ideal for our trucks but I haven't found any on auto parts sites.
Thanks for any input. I may be putting on the Sky's off road hanger too while I'm doing it
Mitch,
I'm in the process of finalizing the replacement of the ball joints on my truck. The 2nd link that Barry posted is the one I followed for removal procedures. Pretty straight forward. Mine hasn't been real difficult, so I feel lucky thus far. Luckily my dad had a ball joint press and a shop press, so that worked out for my benefit. I debated the seal replacements, but decided to do them on others recommendations. You can get everything for that from Bob or Ed. I would say on the balljoints themselves, search the brands on the internet. The brand that Barry has a link to above seemed to have good reviews, and if you decide on them, one vendor, Buy Discount Performance Tires at The Tire Club | Toyo | Bridgestone | Firestone offers a discount code,
10.00_off. research the brand and you can decide from there.
Either way u go with brand names etc...Do it all and be done, get all the suggested seals and check your wheel bearings too before you order, I know everything was pretty beat on my front end w/ 130K. I gathered parts for about 2 months and did it all at once and the truck is like new now.
I decided to replace the differential oil seals after reading that they have a tendency of leaking soon after removing and replacing the drive axles. I know others have popped out the old seals and installed the new ones without any problems but I ruined 2 before I decided to get the seal installation tool from Quad 4x4 ( http://quad4x4.com/qk4644.html ) to do the job. And PLEASE understand, these are the differential oil seals (http://www.northerndrivetrain.com/pr...SPI-52148.html) NOT the large ESOF seals on the outer axles near the hubs. Just got the tool yesterday and it looks perfect and will prevent the issue I was having with the install. I'll be posting some pics and a report later this weekend (assuming everything goes in correctly). Also, Northern Drivetrain ( http://www.northerndrivetrain.com/product/SPI-52148.htm ) has the Spicer seals for $13 each as opposed to the ones from Ford that cost $51 and they look to be the same exact seal but I'll confirm that today when those seals come in.
