Torque strap vs solid mounts... What are you guys running?
To those of you who are putting out some real power, what are you doing for your engine mounting situation? Torque strap? If so, what did you use and any pictures? There's a lot going on in that area between front accessories and steering on the frame. Solid mounts? Single solid mount on drivers side? Which did you use and did anyone have trouble ripping the mounting ears off or otherwise damaging the block?
Reason I ask is my latest pair of motor mounts seem to be on the way out again. I'm noticing some more movement in my shifter than there should be and looking at my passenger side header it's now got a dimple from where it has hit the frame rail. The mounts aren't separated yet I know it's coming soon. I'm sick of breaking mounts every few months and need a good solution, preferably an easy one that doesn't involve redesigning the whole motor mount and frame perches.
In the past I've used a chain in a pinch to save the motor mount from breaking completely. Some people use heim joints with a threaded shaft that's adjustable, but they act like solid mounts and you can feel the engine vibration. A friend of mine has a mud truck that uses adjustable turnbuckles as torque limiters.
I use a threaded tube with bushing ends. Depending on the setup it might have eyelet bushings or threaded rod bushings on either or both ends. I build them myself using Energy Suspension bushings for sway bar end links or shocks that you can find on the shelf of most any parts store. The reason is that they prevent any movement, but the bushings help keep the vibration and shock down.
