Question Thump at stop/start

I saw a reference to this problem but cant find the thread.

My 2000 Ex has a thump that happens when slowing to a stop, right as the vehicle comes to a complete stop but just before the front suspension "lifts" after the initial "dive" that happens when you apply the brake.

If I ease up on the brakes as I slow (like doing a "limo stop" where you can't feel that you have stopped moving), the thump happens at the instant I apply the throttle to start moving again. I can even make it happen when applying moderate brake to stop but lifting off the brake while still rolling forward.

I can't tell if it is suspension related, but I would think it is since I don't feel it when moving and letting off the throttle or putting my foot into it, but that isn't a diagnosis I know.

Ay ideas what to look for?

Does it sound/feel like it's from the front or rear?

Usually, if from rear... The slip yoke needs service. This is very easy to do or you can take to ford.

I had this done at dealership last year for $99.

Hope this helps.

Hard to tell, as you feel it through the frame, not the steering wheel or pedals. I initially thought front end since it coincides with the dip the nose takes when you apply the brakes.

Front end, would be process of elimination, front swaybar end links could cause the thumping. Even a body mount can cause a thumping...

In my case From what you discribed it was my slip yoke.

If it were a body mount, chances are high that you would notice it under your feet when in drivers or passenger seat... Please note this usually starts off as a creaking sound and by the time it gets to thumping a few years would have passed.

I did have a small creak under my feet but after removing the seats and console to run sime wiring, it went away. As I took the seats out I noticed the bolts were not what I would call tight by any stretch of the imagination, so I chalked that up to loose seat bolts. This is definitely not the seat bolts. Will get some grease and get dirty doing the slip yoke job. Seems a small/cheap preventative step that just might fix the issue.

One simple thing to look at are the shock mounts. Simply use a big box-end wrench or a break-over and socket and check the torque on the lower mount bolts.

I know...it may be only a 10% chance of being the problem...but I had this problem one time and it sounded like my ball joints were falling out.

I have the same thing on my Ex... I have been told by the Ford Mechanic that the rear slip joint on the rear drive line is a common source of the noise, it would cost about $100 to have it pulled apart and re-greased up and "might" solve the problem... so not sure its worth the trouble to "maybe" fix the issue, I just keep driving it and it doesn't seem to get worse so **** it. I have 106K on my Ex... if it blows up oh well.

It's basically free if you do it yourself. Not at all difficult, PM me if you want a step by step with tools needed. Even if it doesn't 'need it', it's a fun job that will increase your knowledge and skills.

I had the same problem. The blue "nylon" coating on the spline was worn off. That coating is essential, unfortunately. I had to buy a new drive shaft, as I could not find anywhere to have the spline recoated in this mystery blue coating.

You can try greasing it yourself as it only takes a few minutes to remove the drive shaft. Others have suggested Marine level grease.
