Hello, I've read several posts regarding similar whining from an explorer but mine seems a bit different: My wife’s 95 exploder whines from the front end, all most, all of the time. It is related to vehicle speed as it gets louder the faster that you go and does not stop or change during acceleration or coasting or if in neutral. The sound goes away if I’m turning left on a "sweeping curve" at a good speed and it also stops if I drive over a bump: the kind of bump that the vehicle kind of "floats" after. Meaning: the truck's weight in not fully on the suspension yet. As soon as it “lands” the sound immediately returns.
I’m wondering if this would indicate a Driver’s side bearing. (Less weight on that side while turning left and while flying through the air) Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked power steering fluid, belts and bearings on the front of the engine's accessories? An old test was to start the engine w/o belts (turning any accessories). Good Luck, jow
Thank you for the reply! I don’t think that it could be the PS etc. If, at 40 MPH, I put it in neutral and let the engine come down to idle the sound remains constant. As the vehicle slows (still in neutral) the sound decrease relative to vehicle speed.
Solved - In case this can help someone in the future - replacing the front hubs solved my issue and returned my explorer to its once quiet ride. It's remarkably easy and there's a great how-to vid on YouTube
