6.9 white smoke, black smoke, loss of power

Hello All I just put up a post but it went into the wrong area. I am new to this site and first time diesel owner. What we have is a 6.9 in an 86 F 350 box truck with 4 speed trans about 186,000 on it. The truck was smoking real bad at start up whitish smoke. When driving it tons of white smoke and black smoke. lots of banging like the injectors were being fired to soon. Previous owner had put a new injector pump on, I have cracked all the injectors loose to bleed had one with some bubbling. Now what I have is tons ogf black powdery smoke and a flat spot on acceleration with some jerking thrown in for fun. Thanks for the help.

did the po replace the injectors at the same time or before that. they normaly only last about 150,000 so if there originals you might want to look into replacing them. also do you know how the po pulled the pump?

Hi Thanks No I don't know how he pulled the pump and it doesn't look like he replaced the injectors. I loosened up the ip and moved it to the drivers side and it seemed to help. Still have the flat spot and some black smoke. The guy that owned the truck was a mobile mechanic or so he says. lol

qtrmile,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

The fuel may be turned up on the IP as well, that would explain the black smoke.

On a NA diesel motor some black smoke is normal, excessive black smoke is just wasted fuel though.

White smoke at start up could be bad glow plugs, not enough heat in the engine for complete combustion of the fuel.
