How to Raise Shift Points - C6?

Iv got an 88 E150 van 351/C6. The shift points are currently 5mph from 1st to 2nd and 15mph 2nd to 3rd. Is there a way to raise these? Its got a vacuum modulator with an adjusting screw in the end of it where the vacuum hose connects. Is that what controls the shifting? Appreciate any help, advise. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can adjust it somewhat by the module.Try playin around with it....do 1/2 turn intervals to see what happens.

You're absolutley correct.

I can't remember for the life of me which direction for what result.
I THINK it is clockwise for a sooner shift.

How to Raise Shift Points - C6?

Have adjusted screw in vacuum modulator, can raise 1st to 2nd shift up to about 10mph but 2nd to 3rd shift stays at 15mph. Can anyone tell me just how the shifts are adjusted? Is it by the set screw? Which way does what? And/or it is by the lenght of the steel pin inside the modulator? Shorter does what? Longer does what? Appreciate any help, advise. Thanks, Frank_65

Get your hands on a manual from ATSG (Automatic Transmission Services Group). It should have all the information you need for adjustments, etc.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Nov-02 AT 09:53 PM (EST)]turn the adjuster "in" to the right sounds like you have it backed all the way out. if that does not work buy a new one. btw what rmp or amount of throttle are you giving it to get a 2-3 shift at 15 mph?? another thing it might be is the governor inside the trans. it might be stuck open causing the trans to "think" you are going faster. for that one i would talk to a trans shop. or your favorite tech.

How to Raise Shift Points - C6?

Want to thank dvldog458, mil1on and slave2dafords for their input ut still wrestling with the pr9oblem. Swaped vacuum modulators and valve bodies and now 1st to 2nd shift better shifting at about 10 to 12 mph but 2nd to 3rd still shifting way too early at about 15 to 17 mph. Am thinking about pulling the tailshaft and replacing the goveror? Not sure what Im gettin into here. Adjustments of the set screw in the vacuum modulator seems to have no effect. Im sure thats a sign of something but just dont know what. Appreciate any help, advise. Thanks. frank_54

The modulator is only going to give you very fine adjustment. The shift points are defined by the governor, its springs and weights! I am not familiar with the C6 but for other transmissions you can get calibration kits with different springs and weights to adjust the points. Check with www.summitracing.com if they sell it. The other possibility is to find a C6 in a junkyard that resides in a somewhat more sporty setup than a van. Chances are that the shiftpoints in that are higher and you can pilfer the governor! E.g. on GM, you can find high shiftpoint governors in Z28 camaros and drop them in your th350 to raise the points.

Hope this helps. Again, I am not sure if the C6 works this way, so take it with a grain of salt and double check with a manual / book.

Cheers, George

How to Raise Shift Points - C6?

Thanks to geoaigel and again to slave2dafords for their replys. Wasent getting anywhere with adjusting the vacuum module so went ahead and swapped the valve bodies. Now will upshift at acceptable speeds. 1st to 2nd at about 15-18mph and 2nd to 3rd at about 25-28mph. I can live with that. Problem now is downshifting. It wont downshift unless you come to a complete stop. Slow down to go around a corner or whatever and it stays in 3rd gear. Even down below 5mph it still stays in 3rd but come to a complete stop and it goes back into 1st?? Could this be the govenor? Thanks.

How to Raise Shift Points - C6?

Found a C6 at the swap meet bought it as-is no guarentee that it was good. Got it home cleaned it up and removed the valve body. It wasent an exact match with mine but all the oil passages were the same, the linkage was the same and it bolted up exactly the same so I swapped it in. Filled with fluid and put it in gear. Had reverse but no foward gears. Figured the valve body was a bad unit so I pulled it out and reinstalled my origonal. Filled with fluid and put it in gear, still no foward gears! Its back the way it was and now has no foreward gears just reverse. When you put it in gear , either D, 2 or 1 there is a very slight pull forward but wont drive an inch.. Have had it back out and in at least 3 times since and still the same, no forward gears. Something happened when I installed that valve body I bought at the swap meet but dont know what. I inspected it before I put it in and it seemed ok, the filter was fairly clean. Appreciate any help, advise. Thanks.

How to Raise Shift Points - C6?

Still struggling with this transmission problem. As stated previously
after replacing the valve body I now have no foward gears just reverse. Before that All that was wrong was the shift points were low. In trying to correct the problem all Iv done is makw it worse. Reinstalled the origonal valve body and still no foward gears which I had prior to changing valve bodies. Am planning on pulling the trans probably tomorrow. Last thing I did was check the line pressure. With rear wheels off the ground van running(idle) and transmission in drive I disconnected one of the trans cooling lines at the radiator and there was no fluid, not a drop. Can someone tell me what this is this an indication of? Front pump bad? Valve body bad? Appreciate any help/advise. Thanks.
