Hey guys, I could really use some help trouble shooting my 01 f150 5.4 180K miles. Everything started with some random sputtering at a cold start or after a heavy rain. Having same issue with an old car years ago I assumed it was plugs. After changing the plugs, the truck wouldn't even start. Sounds as if it isn't getting spark, checked compression on #1 and it read at 60lbs. I was told it might be the timing and was then told by someone else that if the timing goes out on that motor, then the motor is blown ( doesn't make sense to me). I was also by a ford mechanic that the timing rarely goes out on this motor, that in his experience it's usually a cam bolt breaking. I read that the 5.4 doesn't have the cams bolted in, but they are pressed in. I do have some mechanical knowledge and what I don't know I can generally figure out once I know the problem. Can anyone give me some input from their experience?
My input first is not to listen to all these other people with differeing opinions if you have no way to sort out who may be right.
Not an opinion but advise you to diagnos the problem before jumping to any conclusions and doing things that may lead to wrong conclusions, extra work, expense or add another issue to cause further confusion. .
Very first thing is the system monitors it'self. Are there any codes set?
If yes, address them first other wise no one knows what's going on.
Not trying to be a hard a** but don't go after a problem in such a manner or you could hear the moon in made of green cheese.
Good luck.

That wasn't helpful in any way, you could have told me to cut the floor out and drive it like Fred Flintstone and that would have been more helpful of an answer. I was curious if anyone else has had the same or similar problem or some tips to find the problem hence the symptoms of what has happened. If I was looking for random ridiculous responses I would have titled it "lets all waste our time" rather than "Trouble shooting help".
