carb problems

I am having some difficulties with my truck. When ever i start moving my bronc shakes violently when i give it gas. It seems to run like the choke is stuck on. There is also an overwhelming smell of gasoline at times but not always. It does not do this in park only when it is in gear. When i took off the breather the carb has been adjuxted to where the shutter is about a quarter open and does not move when i give it gas in park. I am sure that the carb is in need of a rebuild but i am replacing it next week anyways (hopefully) so i don't really want to waste the time and money. however the 2-3 miles a gallon that i am getting right now is getting very expensive. Any ideas on what may be causing this and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. thankx in advance.

well i was on my way to get a rebuild kit for the carb when i noticed a small drip under the bronco. checked it out and sure enough the fuel pump was leaking so i replaced it and she is running fine now.

I'm guessing the shutter you're talking about is the choke plate. When the engine is warm it should be completely open all the time, not just when you give it gas.
