so title says it all, are the internals in the differentials of the same in the two?
I wanna get the new gears for my truck so i can get the power back. but i dont wanna buy the ones for the ttb setup if they wont work in the dana 44, which i hope to swap to, at sometime in the future.
also if i get a set of warn locking hubs will they swap between the two axles as well?
yes the gears and carriers are the same between the two. just make sure you buy the right carrier for your gears you are swapping to, or get thick gears if you are sticking with your stock open diff, because there is a carrier break on d44's.
ok so im not the most technical when it comes to axles so maybe you could explain to me what a carrier break is and why I would need to be careful when choosing a carrier
dana axles have carrier breaks, carrier=differential. i'm not 100% sure on the break for d44's but i believe your stock carrier works from 2.73 gears up to 3.93's. 4.10 gears and lower require a new carrier or the purchase of "thick" gears. thick gears are made thicker to accommodate the stock thinner carrier "ring" or whatever it's called.
you said the ttb has a carrier that will work u to a 3.93 im wanting to go to a 4.56 so i need a new carrier, so will a d44 work in the ttb. that was my question.
but i think you still answered that question in your last reply saying that the ttb was the same as the d44.
the ford d44 ttb is a split in half halfassed attempt at ifs. it's center section is a dana 44 high pinion, same as the solid axle high pinion d44's that have been in use since the mid 70's. all bronco's, 1/2 ton 4x4's, and a lot of 3/4 ton 4x4 fords from 1980-1996 came with d44 ttb front axles.
to run 4.56 gears you have 3 options. 1. use your stock front diff and buy 4.56 thick gears for it. 2. scour the web and find a d44 spacer ring to run "thin" 4.56 gears on your stock diff. 3 or you could just buy a new 3.93 and up diff with a matching standard 4.56 high pinion or "reverse rotation" gear set.
if you don't understand after that i am done because i have a short attention span and i just ran out of patience.

Dan,
You find me a place that legitimately has "thick gears" for a D44 reverse rotation axle and I'll let you take my ranger for a drunken joy ride! I'm not worried that will ever happen, since they don't make them.

karl, i didn't think they made them either and me and kris got in a little spat about it a few weeks back. he linked some from a place he deals with and i stfu. i've never run across them in any searches myself though....
here's what he linked me, but i just noticed it doesn't say if it's reverse rotation or not. says it won't work for ttb or ifs though DANA 44 4.56T THICK GEAR AND INSTALL KIT
i guess it says standard, so you and me are right and kris is wrong, cause i take that to mean low pinion.....
Why would you want to go from the 3/4" ton front to a 1/2" ton front? Save your money and search for a D60 front and swap that in if you want to ditch the D50ttb. No sense downgrading!
