I have located a 1995 F350 PSD based ambulance in good running condition for cheap. I would like to use this engine in my 77 F150 that has never ran since I got it. My dilemma is should I do a cab swap or just the engine and tranny? The cab swap seems like more work since I don't have a lift. Is it worth it at all?
There is a thread on here with a guy who has done a cab swap on to a powerstroke frame. I just recently commented on it so it should be within the first 10 pages of this forum. I think it is called 79 cab on to 97 frame or something like that.
I just finished reading that thread, the cab swap looks like a huge PITA. Has anyone swapped a PSD into an dentside engine only? It seems a whole lot easier, I can deal with the wiring and engine mounts. It looks like the firewall will need to be modified to clear the downpipe. The brakes might be difficult as well.
Is it 2wd? If it's 4wd, you might have issues with the front driveshaft not lining up right with the axle and the trans case, so you'd have to swap out axles. You may need a new driveshaft built for the rear, since the distance between the trans and axle are likely to be different, and the way the driveshaft connects to the axle may be different. I would think that a body swap would be less work than a drivetrain swap considering all the mods you'd probably have to make to the frame and body, plus finding a place to mount all the drivetrain wiring. With the body swap you'd probably also have the option of the more current cab electronics to go with it, and likely a more comfortable ride. Very likely a more comfortable ride.
BTW, powerstroke into a dentside is something I'd love to do as well. One other factor to consider is the increased weight of the diesel engine vs. the original gas and whether you'll overload the stock springs/front end.
IF you have a f-150 frame? I wouldn't use it without makeing some serious upgrades. I have broken/cracked just about all my f-150 frame crossmembers with my 472. I have since built up my frame and rewelded around engine cross members and fixed from heavy torque situations. Something to consider in your decision.
The truck is 2wd, rear drive shaft will not be any real problem. The hydroboost brakes are one of my biggest concerns. Other than the PCM which mounts through the firewall, I don't know if there is much wiring that has to go into the cab. The IDM mounts under the hood from the factory. I don't have any way to lift the cabs easily either.
This post is right on time I hijacked another post last week asking about the same swap but didn't get much feedback.
I have a 95 250 2wd with a turbo 7.3 psd showing 60k on the clock and I really want to do a cab swap or a engine drop and can't decide cause they are both gonna be a lot of work!
Fordcummins.com people told me all the engine crossmembers were the same. I found another thread with 73 highboy psd swap, but the pics don't work. I hope to see them since that truck has the setup I am looking for. Not sure about the hydroboost brakes on the old firewall.
