I own a 2002 Supercrew Lariat with 5.4L. Love it to death. Tow it frequency over the years. It now has 95K miles. I get around 14-15 mpg mixed driving on average.
I'm actually flirting on moving up to 2007 Supercrew Lariat with 6.5 bed. I wonder if it's going to be much improvement in towing performance for same 5.4L engine? Hopefully get improved gas mileage by 2-3 miles per gallon at most. Maybe it's just a wishful thinking....
Your thoughts on difference between both generations? Or keep it for few more years and land newer generation of 2009-2011. hmmmmm......
I wouldn't count on too big of a fuel mileage gain. I average 13-15 mixed driving on my 04 and my dad gets 15-17 in his 99. Both trucks are ext cab 4x4 with the 5.4 of their generation and 373 gears. He takes it easy in order to get that mileage though. If you were to step up to a model with the 6 speed you might see more of an improvement. I like the interior room on the 04+ trucks myself that was a real selling point for me.
I used to have an 03 and the only real advantages going from 03 to 05 for me ended up being as said the interior definitely has more room in the 05 and the 05 has a deeper bed, you can definitely fit more in it. Other than that the only other thing I see that could make a difference is options that they offer in the newer trucks that were not available yet in the older trucks.
The 3v 5.4L will have a little more grunt than your 2v, but the 2007 will also be a heavier truck. So you probably won't "notice" any huge improvement.
As for mileage, it's likely not to change either.
I'm 65% city for the past 10 months of ownership, and I'm averaging 13.2mpg overall. As low as mid 11s during winter, and as high as mid 16s on summer blend hwy trips.
Like Scrwdrvr said, the best part of the 04-08 as compared to your 02 is the increased interior room, and the much deeper bed.
Ok, so I won't have any high expectation on gas mileage on the 5.4. I'm particularily interested on improved towing performance and power on pulling up and down the mountains on the newer generation 04-08 compared to the 97-03 generation.
I'll try to ask the dealer for test drive on towing, I wonder if they would allow it.
If you're primarily concerned with towing, then I would suggest custom tunes. Firming the shift points, providing a little extra low end torque, and earlier converter lockup will certainly help your towing.
Went to dealer again earlier, test drove it with my trailer. Much better performance, quite smooth! My wife said GO FOR IT! Hooray! Am excited about this. It's my fourth F150!
Still not sure which gears is in it. Code B6 for axle. Anyone knows?
2007 Supercrew Lariat, white.... 29,500 miles on it.

Great.... thanks for the answer. 3.73 LS.... Dang, no wonder the rear tires spin easily on our gravel roads around the neighborhood.
This differs from my previous 2002 F150, doesn't spin easily as this one.
Dilas, I know that feeling. My wife just lit up our gravel driveway leaving the house on Friday night. Had a nice fun time raking that back out yesterday afternoon when we got back in town. Love the 3.73 LS in my truck!
