Wheels/Tires

Im looking into some 35" tires...Im kind of partial to BFGoodrich or Goodyear...but open to suggestions... I like the aggressive Mud terrain tread, but I dont mud bog ALL the time so its impractical.
Im thinking an All Terrain is where Im going.

More importantly some nice new wheels to put them on!
What does a wider tire really help with anyway? Whatever tires I end up getting are going to be wide...10.5 or 12.5. Make it handle more load since its distributed better?
and the backspacing... if I get a wide tire...and MORE backspacing. Does that make them stick out more? If I get a wide tire and LESS backspacing..does that make it stick out less?

Less is more. Less backspacing means the outside edge of the wheel sticks farther out from the mounting surface. Tire opinions are like B holes. Everyone has one and they usually stink...

My opinion only:
Think hard about what you do with the truck 80% of the time. Daily driver 80% mud runner 20% then all terain should work. Mud tires have their purpose, by all means, but for wet roads, and hard pavement, not good.

My Ford, semi aggressive tread for hauling wood, getting to camp, etc. Load rating because I tow a camper or a Jeep 90% that the truck is moving, and QUIET ride is of utmost importance.

My JEEP, pure A$$, trail, rock, mud, with no regard for pavement. I drive it work, or 20 minutes away occasionally. So I run Super Swamper TSL, with no appologies to my backside on the pavement.

EDIT:
One more thought...looks like you "mud run". Save your precious pennies if you can. Get a wheel and tire package for the road. And an off road set only. I kind of have this with the Jeep, but you have to be dilligent, plus have a place to store wheels and tires. If you are not dilligent, you will never ever have the set of tires on the truck you want.

But... my wifes Durange. Wide siping, semi aggressive tread, so she can get to work in the snow, drive on the highway in the rain, and aggressive enough to run down a muddy gravel road without having me to worry.

BFG KM2 is a nice "all around" with your mud in mind, but might be loud on pavement, and not wear like you would want. I am sure others with heavy trucks can suggest a tire that will work.

If you don't mud too often then the AT KO's are a good tire. I run them all the time. I drive in the fields, sometimes muddy and on the farm. Daily driver and tows my HEAVY 5th wheel camper great. Good all around tire.

Now if you do more mudding get the mud terrain KM2's. They are fair on the highway and tow decent. Make more road noise especially when show some wear but great off road. Not as good off road as the Super Swamper TSL's but they are pretty hard core in my opinion.

You will have to get a wide tire if you want 35's. You will have to go with 315/75-16 or 35-12.50's (same size tire). an 8-10 inch rim will hold these. 9 inch would be perfect in my opinion.

Now if you get bigger wheels like 17's or bigger the tire options are a bit broader but the price goes up significantly also.

Good luck,
Neal

Thanks guys! Appreciate the input.
I do indeed mud run! Not straight up bog water up to the grill, but you know a good foot or two deep never hurt noone!
I do have a set of 16x8 wheels with 265/65R16 load range E highway tires on it...they are practically brand new(close to 5000 miles). so this would be my second set.. I just was aiming to keep these bad boys on around town and the majority of the time EXCEPT highway hauling.. cuz Im looking into some ProComp Xtreme alloy 16x10s...chrome polished and sealed shipped to my door 116 a piece!
Not to mention my friend is currently running those KMO or KM2 or whatever bf goodrich mud terrain and he has about 30000 miles on them and got about half tread left!
ANYWAY...thanks for the input!
kinda started blabbin...would hate to have to get back to work

Just a couple of thoughts. BFG M/Ts are a good looking tire and are pretty quiet. I personally like the look of Nitto Mud Grapplers, but that may be more agressive than you're looking for. They're loud too. You'll wanna make sure that you don't go too wide as well. 12.5 is as big as you can go without rubbin the leaf springs. More width means more surface area on the ground and better grip. You can also get the same effect from some AT tires if you deflate them before gettin in the mud hole. 40psi usually does the job for me. Bear in mind that knobby tires can reduce your fuel mileage and make some serious noise.

Hope this helps
