Woudn't mind finding out what it was, since I am currently using points and am on the fence about going to an electic system. Points can be a pain in the extreame heat and in really wet weather. Still contemplating this change!
Yeah electronic can be an improvement, but Duraspark II is better than Duraspark I (which is what I have).
Did you install a hig voltage starter coil also or keep original. I was thinking about using ACCEL electronic ignition system.
Hate to bad mouth anything I haven't used, but haven't heard too many good things on the ACCEL. Being old and set in my way's, the DSII system I know the best and has not let me down since the late 70's. If I were to go to something else, it would probably be Mallory. MSD and Pertronics pop up quite often with problems reported. Sorry for the hijack 73FordF150.
DuraSparks I heard tend to not react well to heat. Where are you located? Here in VA it hit 105 for the past 3 days, while that is very rare, the average temp is in the high 80's to 90's. Is it true that electronic systems are more forgiving than points?
Electronic vs points= no maintenace, wider plug gap for bigger spark. Heat has never been a problem for me, however I do mount with an airgap between module and mounting suface. Plus Bronco's are notorious for high underhood temps. Thanks for compliment.
I am on the fence with this truck, part of me wants to restore it to original specs and then the customizer in me wants to modify this truck. I think I am leaning towards keeping her stock, just because it is a test of my will power. Besides my wife thinks its cute this way & heck just to catch her in a vehicle this old would be a hoot!
No 1973 anything has DuraSpark...because...it was not introduced until 1974.
Even though introduced in 1974, some vehicles do not have it until 1976.
1974: The module is one year only / 1975: The module is one year only.
1976/79's use the same module (excepting some 1976/79 sold new CA vehicles).
This module has a blue plastic square above where the wires feed out, was also used into the 1990's.
1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A, D8VZ-12A199-A, D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module-Blue (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford.
MSRP: $142.00 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $76.68.
--------------------------------------------------------------
1974/79's w/DuraSpark have a stator (aka magnetic pick-up coil) inside the dizzy. The same one was used 1974/79 excepting 1979 LTD/Mercury Grand Marquis 351W with EEC.
D4PZ-12A112-A .. Stator (Motorcraft DU-1A) / Available from Ford.
MSRP: $97.96 // PARTSGUYED.COM price: $52.90.
Engine heat (especially radiating from the red hot left exhaust manifold on V8's) is the mortal enemy of DuraSpark ignition modules.
Thru 1986, it was mounted on the left fender inner apron, just in front of the firewall.
If you replace it, use some washers to space it further away from the apron. The more airflow around the little darlin' ... the better.

I'm not exactly sure. I don't remember if I replaced it with one for a '75 (what the ignition came out of) or a '73. I've replaced it with a standard coil, it's not a high voltage one. It seems to work fine, at least for a while.

Ok, thanks for the advice! I kinda wish that the PO wouldn't have retrofitted the '75 DSI ignition in my '73, but I guess it could be better than points.
