My 2004 Lariat with the 5.0 engine (I think...know it is the big one for that year) makes a ticking sound (like tappets used to sound in my old 68 ford when oil was low) but it goes away after a minute or so. if engine gets cold again the noise will appear again for a minute or so until the engine wrms up. I know that tappets are not the issue with new engines so I asked my mechanic to listen. He said it had some thing to do with the shape of the pistons and that when the engine warms up the piston has seated itself properly and the noise goes away. I think that sounds silly but not sure.........what say you folks
It could be a number of things. Your mechanic is thinking of piston slap but that's more of a thudding type noise. You could have a bad lash adjuster, leaking manifold gasket, or possible loose spark plug. Most likely its the manifold gasket if the noise goes away when warm.
Assuming then it is a manifold leak.... when it heats up it seals itself? Why else would the noise go away. Is it important to get fixed? I realize these are likely dumb questions but........
The manifold and cylinder head expand a little when the engine warms up sealing the leak. Try to isolate the noise to one side and see if there is any black carbon deposits where the manifold bolts to the head. A flashlight and inspection mirror will help.
