302 - ticking - Input required
I've got a nice little 79 F-150 (as can be seen in my gallery) and I would like to ask a question about the little 302 it has.
It is making a ticking sound under the passenger's side valve cover - has been since fall - not getting much worse really, but is most noteable when the engine is cold. Once it warms up, it isn't that noticeable - the average joe wouldn't notice.
What is the prognosis and what is the cure?
(please no responses saying to slap a stroked rebuilt 460 in!
- I've got a spare 351m if I need it in old blue - the infamous parts truck - also in my gallery) Thanks!
Seriously, you might have a rocker arm that worked it's way loose. Just take the valve cover off, and wiggle each of the 8 rockers under that cover, and see if any of them feel loose. If you find the one you're looking for, then tighten the nut holding it down back to around 25 ft*lbs. If that's not it, you could be looking at a minor rod knock, mine sounded like a rocker arm tick for 6,000 miles until it got very loud because I was losing oil pressure.
yeah, it's definately screwed. You should look into putting a GE F404 Turbofan jet engine in it, or at least a bored and stroked 460 with a monster cam and loads of nitrous on it. Do that first, and then we can talk about your supercharging options.
Yeah, that's my kind of "fix".
But seriously folks...
Also check for an exhaust leak. It's suprising how much that will sound like a lifter.
Just my 2¢
Greg
Seriously, thanks for the tips on the rocker arms and checking for an exhaust leak (any thoughts on common problem spots to check).
I don't think it is a rod - the bottom end has been re-built (new crank, etc) and it was done by a pro.
Oh, and I've put on about 10,000 k.m.'s since I first noticed it.
Hopefully I will get to it this week-end.
Thanks again!
