Down Stream O2 sensor purpose 95 ranger

What is the purpose of the O2 sensor behind the CAT? My CAT is in bad shape and rattles and is a general pain in the backside. If I remove it what should I do with the second O2 sensor? I have already welded the case of the CAT back together once and I am tired of messing with it. It is a poor design. The actual CAT element only goes about half way the length of the converter. At that point, there is a big temperature gradient and it fatiques the metal and makes it crack. A new CAT would cost more than the truck is worth. The truck has over 200k on it and I plan on getting another 200k out of it.

A downstream 02 sensor's only purpose is to make sure the CAT before it is working properly.

There are products available that allow for the elimination of the downstream 02 sensor in OBD systems. They are usually dubbed as 02 sensor "simulators" or "eliminators". Try a web search.

Just as a comment, there are parts of the country that are requiring successful emissions inspections before licensing. If you remove the cat, and add an 'eliminator', you may be setting yourself up for an inspection problem.
In CA, the CARB has stated that only converters with their stamp of approval can be used as replacements. Inspectors out there are 'different'. You never know what will happen when you go in. As noted, it all depends on your state laws, so just be aware before investing in something that might not be allowed.
In most states, I think you can use 'generic' catalytic converters for replacement as long as they keep the 'checker' O2 sensor happy and keep the SES or CEL warning lights turned off.
What is the year and model?

Well there are no inspections in Alabama. I may look into an aftermarket CAT.

no inspections at all? wow that is cool. anyway you might still want a cat for fuel efficiency purposes. when mine rusted out and failed inspection, i just got a generic one welded on. cost about a 100 bux at a local muffler shop. works fine.
good luck
