5.0 running hot???

Ok guys I need some opinions here on where I should start. first off I'm in the process of searching out a hard shift problem but I noticed today that I think I'm running hot. temp gauge sits consistently on the a of normal I checked oil today and engine felt really hot. I could barely touch upper rad hosee lower hose is nowhere near as hot and I noticed water pump gasket is leaking a bit. obviously I have to fix pump but do you guys think that is the problem?

Oh ya, I forgot to mention that there was alittle smoke coming out of dip stick tube when I checked oil. Definitely will be installing a mechanical temp gauge.

A thermostat and water pump are cheap. IMO, I would replace them if you're unsure of when they were last changed.
Mine runs between the N and O. When I'm climbing a big hill with my quad in the back it has has hit the A in hot ambient temps. (25+ celcius)

It stays on the a all the time. I replaced pump, thermostat and fan clutch. And the gauge pretty much stayed in the same spot, Mabey alittle lower. System seems to be working fine, thermostat opens and closes, rad flows. I noticed the the po had put a piece of window screen in front of the rad and condensor and it was pretty dusty. I removed it and it brought the gauge down to the left side of the m.

mine generally will rest in the middle of the word NORMAL (R and M) so thats usually about right, but you should have the needle resting about half way for the most part, now if your climbing a hill with a heavy load and the engine is working harder then a slight increase should be expected...

Before I changed the pump and everything else I did hear some gurgling from the heater core but I thought it was just cause it was alittle low on coolant I would top off and it would go away. The gasket on the old pump was leaking. I have only had this truck for about two months now. Really clean rig so I'm in the process of fixing the few problems it has. After this, if I figure out the vss signal fault I have the truck will be good.

I have installed a new ( not reman) water pump and thermostat ( 180 degree ) and the truck runs on the "N" on normal no matter how hot it is outside.

Ok now I just went to the store and it started shifting hard. I stopped at a intersection it hit second hard and then it went to shift into third and there was nothing there I pulled it back into second then put it back into drive and it was fine.
