I just bought a 6.0 about two months ago which is my first diesel. Before I bough the truck I was somewhat excited about being able to idle long for a long period of time. Like the semi's do at truck stops. I do a lot of long trips with my truck where I'll just pull in to a rest stop and sleep for like an hour then get back on the road. Sometimes it gets pretty cold at night and I would like to be able to keep my engine running with the heat and also the radio.
However after browsing these forums for awhile I've learned that you should not idle for longer then 10 minutes. Is this due to the EGR, if so can I idle longer if I do an EGR delete or the bulletproof diesel upgraded cooler. I have already installed a coolant filter and my temps are running perfectly now.
First thing you need is the high idle mod you can find it in the tech folder. It tells you how to do it you are just hooking a switch between two wires that are already there under the dash. The reason for not idling is the low RPMs 600 or so it causes what is called wet stacking the fuel in combustion chamber does not fully burn and what fuel that doesn't bleeds down in crank case gets in oil and delute it . The high idle mod runs at 1200 rpm's and you get a full burn .
i have it wired to the stock upfitter switches in my 06. super easy. so easy a caveman could do it. if he had a superduty.
i use the high idel when letting the heater warm up before leaving in cold mornings or to let the cab get cooler with ac in the summer and when useing a winch it helps
You say (I have already installed a coolant filter and my temps are running perfectly now.) What are you useing to read your ECT with do you know what your EOT is running, did you have a problem before with your coolant.

def high idle mod first. at extended low idle the oil pressure is quite low. on short time its not an issue on longer idle time its not so good. high idle will keep up the heat better too which reduces egr issues by a large margin

But what about the soot clogging the intake manifold, turbo, etc. because of there being no boost pressure at those low engine speeds. The high idle still doesn't address this, correct?

I have a scan guage to monitor my temps and no I haven't had a problem with the coolant before.
I was just thinking that the whole reason for not idling to long is because the soot will build up in the egr valve and clog it. I already have the high idle mod hooked to an upfitter switch but I thought cold stacking was only a problem in the winter when the temperature of the motor at idle couldn't get up high enough to burn off the condensation which was what the high idle was used for.
ok my question is he didnt say what year he bought, the tech folder does not list an 07 for this mod. mine is an 07 and has a high idle after 90 seconds or something but what if i wanted it to idle on command, i also sleep in truck in winter for a few hours at a time.
