Here is my problem. I have 180000 miles on my V-10 SD. It has been pretty good to me. I have had this intermittant sputtering issue, almost like a misfire but am baffled. It seems the longer you drive it the more it sputters. After you shut it off for a little bit and drive it seems fine then starts up again. No check engine lights on the dash. Seems to idle fine, but with 10 cylinders it it hard to feel a miss or am I wrong?
-I took it to O'Reilly's and they let me borrow their scanner. No luck-they told me that it would only pick up "check engine light" codes.
-Took it to a couple of other shops to see if they could run a scan with their better scanning equipment-both basically told me unless it has a check engine light on the dash it wont pick up any codes.
-One guy thought it could be the torque converter but after driving it thought it could be a fuel issue, he recommended using a higher octane fuel to see if that would alleviate the issue. Also mentioned that it could be the EGR.
-Where is the EGR located?
I really don't want to pay a shop to run a diagnosis scan if they can't pick up any non check engine light codes. Is that really true?
