The heater in my 92 E150 gets barely warm if that. The van is a Mark III conversion and has rear heat and air. Here are the symtoms and questions:
1. Only cold air comes out of the rear heat.
2. Barely warm air comes out of the front heat.
3. Assuming there is only one heater control valve, it has a
hose that runs from the back of the van to the heater control
valve. Then a hose from the valve connects to the top leg of
what I call a Y connector. The other top leg of the Y
connector goes to the top connection of the heater core. The
bottom leg of the Y connector connects to hose I'm not sure goes
where. My question is I thought the hose going into the valve
would come from the engine and not run to the back of the van?
4. Top hose to the heater core is cold. Bottom is hot.
5. Thermostat seems to be opening and closing okay. Engine gets
to normal operating temperature.
6. Temperature control door seems to be operating okay.
7. Coolant level is okay and replaced radiator cap.
ANY IDEAS ON WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?
If your engine is running normal temp, sounds like the control valve(s) may not be working, unless the cooling system has been allowed to get full of trash. Do you have a separate control/switch for the rear heat? If so, you probably have a second control valve.
My old '86 had a problem with the rear heat, and I found a second valve on the left side of the engine where the heater hose is routed to the back core. I had to pull the engine cover to find it. I'm not sure if the '92 is routed the same. You may be able to check it from underneath the van. My '94 doesn't have rear heat/AC, so I'm not exactly sure of the routing. My Haynes manual says nothing about the rear heater.
