wiring question

79 F250 mud drag truck - Im butchering the factory harness to keep just a few circuits I need.

On the key switch there is a large 8-10ga yellow wire that joins a large 8-10ga black with yellow stripe wire at a fuesable link. The black with yellow stripe wire is supposed to go to the starter solenoid based off the schematic Ive been using BUT this wire has a plug that also joins a smaller 12-14ga yellow with black stripe and red with green stripe wire at its end. When I hacked up my factory harness I labeled the two smaller wires went to the factory amp gauge.

so, could the schematic be wrong and this wire actually go to the alternator or am I missing something? Ive been staring at wires for faaar too long so anything is possible.

Schematic Ive been using

Plug in question

There should be two plugs, one is a three wire, should be blk/y stripe, red, yellow. They in turn all go to the solenoid... The other two wire plug grn/red stripe 'ameter gauge/ alt excite' and white.
What alt are you using? If you are using a 3g you don't need the white, it goes to the voltage reg.

Hmmm, I dont seem to have that combination.

At the plug shown is a heavy black with yellow stripe, smaller red with green stripe and yellow with black stripe. Thats the only plug I have going to the passenger side of the truck.

Ya that plug 'should' be all + at the solenoid, but there should be another two wire plug for the alt. Not a big deal tho if you are running an alt with an internal volt. Regulator. You can run a key on source for the alt's excite wire.

Ps after reading some of your posts on the offroad forum I thought this would be a cake walk for you?? You seem to know what your talking about... Not trying to be offencive.

Ok so youre saying the black/yellow wire goes to the battery side of the starter solenoid? No problem, Ill just cut it and solder on a ring terminal.

The issue Im having is Ive basically gutted the entire harness and Im picking and choosing the circuits I want which was basically just headlights, taillights and windshield wipers (no gauge cluster, heater, duraspark crap, voltage regulator and factory alternator, dome lights, fuel sender, windshield washer pump etc. Before I cut the first wire I took tape and made tags on each wire describing where it went. This particular wire is the last one to completely finish my wiring and the tags arent lining up with the schematic.

Give me pretty much anything else on a 73-79 and I can damn near rebuild it with my eyes closed. Wiring pisses me off.

Yup you got it, solder the ring terminal on with a piece of heat shrink tube over it and you won't have to worry about the connection. Do you have a build thread going on this rig? I will jump over and check it out later if you do...

Thanks man, its done. The solenoid is under the dash now anyway so I was cutting that wire regardless.

Naaa, no build thread this time but this is like the 4th rebuild for this truck in the past 6-8 years. If you look back you may be able to find 2 and 3 on here. I try not to post pics of my trucks/cars on here anymore for my own reasons I guess.

I rep'd you once so once I spread the wealth Ill be back to send a little more your way. Thanks for your help.
