I drove my truck up onto some rocks last night to level out the truck with my Lance camper on it. Every time I’d let go of the steering wheel it wouldn’t stay straight and kept getting forces left by the rock I guess. So I thought at the time it would be a good idea to turn the ignition off and let the wheel lock into place. Well after that I couldn’t unlock it and get the ignition switch to turn. What I should have done was jacked the camper off the truck and used my truck jack to relieve the pressure but I didn’t! I kept tugging on the steering wheel until it gave way. Now the ignition is really stiff and the wheel is all messed up. I got it home somehow, not safely. It’s like I have no power steering, really clunky and binds up on sharp turns.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> What mechanism did I break by forcing the steering wheel to turn? Would a new column fix it or do you think it’s more? I figured I’d ask around and start searching before I tear into it. It's deffinitly not safe to drive at this point!
I can't give you an answer but this will bump you up. If you don't get an answer here there is another forum down further for steering and brakes etc. They might know.
In pulling it a part a bit, the problem seems to be between the tilt and the steering wheel. I unplugged the battery, pulled the air bag and the ignition. Maybe just that center part is replaceable or rebuildable?
I just picked up a used steering column from a salvage yard and it's deffinitly the problem. So besides removing the center steering wheel bolt, is there anything else I need to do to get the wheel off? Or do I need to hit it harder? It seems stuck.
The wheel will be on there pretty tight, put your knees behind it and pull toward yourself while you smack the shaft with a hammer and it will pop eventually.
Actually I reread the one ford pdf on how to do this and ran down to Napa to get a puller. Another job another tool! It's all back together and it definitely fixed the problem. I just need to mess with the gear shift alignment. It’s about ½ off to the left.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
