Have to get the smog test done. I have a late 99 which has the non catalyst ca. sticker and stock with the exception of a Bully Dog Chip. Can anyone tell me what to expect when taking it for the required smog test? Thx.... Ron.
Some techs may look for a chip, some might not. It just depends on the facility. You can be on the safe side and just pull it for the test and then put it back on afterwards if you want.
Some facilities know what's ok (ALL aftermarket exhaust setups, ALL aftermarket intakes) and some have failed guys who have an aftermarket exhaust and intake.
Where are you located? Maybe you can find a local diesel shop and they can point you to a good smog check place that has a good tech.
I just got my 2002 smogged. He ran it at idle for a while and checked for a CEL. Then gave it some pedal and looked for back smoke. Not even a tailpipe probe.
I talked to him and he told me that right now CA is mostly just collecting data on diesels so they know where to set the bar for future diesel smog laws.
Our trucks, the 99-03 7.3s are" OBD-II Exempt", which means they might not get anything when hooking up to that data port. Since we're exempt, all they look for is a check-engine light on the instrument panel, and smoke out the tailpipe.
They also look over the engine bay for physical signs of unauthorized modifications. but turbo-back (or CAT-back, depending) exhaust mods, and air cleaner intake mods are allowed.
Which means you CAN have a 6637, but you cannot have the PCV modded to a road-draft tube.
I took my late 99 for smog ,he told me to take 6637 off, factory box on ,he ask if i did any mod to fuel system , i said no he pluged in to obd and $40.00 and 5 minutes it was finished

Well then he is a fool. Look at the last page of the document that SpringerPop posted. It clearly says that air intakes do not need to be checked.
I left the chip in and passed. He did a visual inspection and looked through a thick manual and made a phone call. He said he was checkinf the OBDII just to make sure it wasn't throwing out any codes. I have to agree strongly with Pop. This is an obvious money grab and part of doing business, living, in Ca.
Now hearing that Sacramento politicians are trying to pass a law to tax those who get a Ca. retirement and move to other states. They want to get a piece of the money even though you move out of here to avoid the Ca. tax laws. Unbelievable.
I don't know how long they're going to do what they're doing. My friend does smog checks and he's now forced to blow diesel smoke in the shop (and breathe it in) as he's doing the test. At some point someone's going to raise the issue to OSHA.
