Ford only rates a 2008 F250 5.4, 2WD auto, 3.73 for 10K and that is the MAX. It goes down to 9K for CC 4x4. Now, you could go to 4.10 gears and have the max trailer weight jump to the range of 11K-12K depending on truck configuration. Gearing would be about it. You could go to 4.30 and increase your weight limit a bit more.
Don't waste your time/money on 4.30s. Go with 4.56 gearing. You'll love it. I have 4.88s in my lifted f-350 and it tows like a dream and gained a good chunk of towing mpg too.

This might be correct. It will definitely increase the towing power even more. On a stock truck, you want to be sure you will still have a reasonable RPM unloaded on the interstate. Use the calculators available on FTE and elsewhere to figure out what ratio fits you best.
In the end it is a judgement call, but you want to have the calculations to make a smart choice. A good gear shop can help you decide too.
