I want to install newer doors on my '80 F100. I'm not going to change out the fenders at this point I am wondering what the best way to do this would be. Should I remove the existing door from the door (4 bolts) and then the remaining hinge and pin from the cab? The replacement doors are from a '92 and have the complete hinge assemblies on them. I figure I could separate the new hinge and bolt the cab hinge part first and then hang the door installing new pins or re-using the pins. Is this going to be a headache for alignment, bearing in mind I'll be doing the fenders and hood later on?
Aligning body panels is always a headache, no getting around that. But you will have it easier since you have the front fender and the rear of the cab to go by.
The bolts that hold the hinge to the cab are very difficult to get to with the door in place. I would take the bolts loose on the door itself, mess with the hinges if you have to and get them bolted back on the cab, and then bolt the door back on. If you do take the hinges off the cab, I would take a sharp nail or something and scratch around the hinger so you can put it back on in exactly the same position.
Is there any advantage to replacing the the existing hinges on the cab with the newer ones that come with replacement door? Also, is it OK to re-use the pins from either set of hinges?
The doors are very rusted, the glass is scratched (PO must have hit them with a sander-swirl marks, etc.) the vent window rubber and anti-rattles seals are toast and I want to switch to push/pull locks. Later I'm going to replace the hood with one I have already painted, new fenders and an '87 cowl with holes instead of slots.
what year is the doors the same? i am asking because i really need to replace my drivers door and i am thinking if the doors are the same would it be the same if i wanted to put a pillar pod on but no one makes a 3 or 4 pillar pod for the 86 and newer
The doors are the same 1980-1996, with some cosmetic redesigns after 1987, and 1992.
The internals, and the door glass is what will be different and the panels, the newer you get..
The cabs sheet metal for the most part are the same 1980-1996 as well. with minor differences. it's the dash and other parts bolted to it.
The pillar pod may or may not work with the other moulding around the windshield and the dash without modification..
