Making Progress and have a question ...
Latest Progress is ...
... the Trans Oil Cooler mounted and connected with S/S AN6 hoses to the (mock-up) Tranny.

... final C4 Tranny received new seals, new filter and gasket, ATI Trans Dip Stick and the Lokar 23" Nostalgia Shifter (just mounted to see the fit, will be removed again and then re-installed when the Tranny is fitted.

Just came back in after fitting the second pair of exhaust hangars. Guess two on each side should do for my shorty system.
Now my question:
I have these nice Flowmaster 40s which I hate to weld in. They are 3" Inlet / 3" Outlet units and I have 3" Exhaust Clamps. Wonder if I should cut slots into the inlet and outlet and then just clamp the exhaust pipes. Both the inlet pipe and the outlet pipe can be pushed into the muffler. Would that hold ? The clamps I have are pretty strong and I guess with four slots on each end and some torque I should be able to clamp the pipes pretty tight.
Any thoughts ????

Either have an exhaust shop bump your pipe up to fit the mufflers (preferred method) or get a short adapter bushing made for this purpose. The slot method is not a good idea at all.
You didn't happen to be an Iowa farmer in another life did you
OK. Here are the details. The 3" pipe which goes into the inlet of the muffler is a pretty tight fit already. You have to twist and turn the muffler a bit to get it off. The 90 bend which goes into the outlet of the muffler is also pretty tight fit. However, I still thought I need to clamp them tight and therefore wanted to slot the muffler in/outlets just with four thin slots. I am not talking about any major squeeze here. Just a little tiny bit. Still not a good idea ???
How did you fit your Flowmasters ??? Did you weld them in ???
Don't slice your mufflers, just trust me on this one. If they are not tight when you are done, see my first response.
How did I hang my flowies? With my wallet. You said you did your exhaust in one day as I recall. Well I beat you by 5 hours then.
I believe he used clamps but MIG is OK too if you are confident your exhaust is right. I can drop my tranny without even dropping my pipes if I choose not to.It was neat to watch someone else improve my truck just this once. I don't enjoy that luxury very often. My duals came out beautiful. Can't comment on the sound level yet. It seems someone left the emission plugs out of the back of the cylinder heads. (That would be me) Couldn't hear it over the open headers I had until yesterday. I guess maybe that explains the warm firewall?
Short and sweet. Kai, normal clamps on normal pipes and mufflers deform the metal to the point where I doubt you could pull them apart with your hands or get them to wiggle even if you remove the clamp. Don't slot your pipes - as 'fenders said it's an Iowa farmer or southwest Ohio mechanic idea that you don't need.
If you want to be reassured, go get a couple cheap adapters that fit together and torque down a clamp on the joint. Then remove the clamp and try to move the two parts. Smart money says you won't be able to wiggle them.
Not that I think you will have any movement problems if your pipe fit is good, but here is one more trick if you experience problems. After clamping them, you can tack them with a MIG and they will be secure. Easy to cut a small weld later if you want.
Here is the reasoning for not slotting. Your exhaust pipe is a cylinder now. Cut it and you have 3 or four pieces of mild steel 1/8" sheetmetal with half the structural integrity.

HAve you though about a pipe expander. I know you don't have access to auto zone there but some of the local parts houses rent or loan them out. JC Whitney might also be a suggestion for you.

... and yes, my truck will see truck duty. The garden dump is just a few hundred yards away, but you can be sure that I will get there in style and I will sure let 'em smoke when I leave this place which is typically crowded with those 65+ guys who have nothing better to do than be in my way when I am in a hurry (my wife generates more garden trash than I can handle sometimes).
... Hey, you have not said anything nice about my cool Lokar shifter and my cool trans cooler with these "real" aerospace S/S hoses (not to be mixed with the wanna be aerospace stuff). Don't you like it ???
Hands, ... thanx for the thoughts, but the pipes fit perfectly into each other. I was just afraid they would slip out when not being clamped or welded. You saw what my second best friends 'fenders and George did to me, didn't you ... ?
Nathan, ... don't worry, my exhaust blows and does not suck. That should help keeping the potatos out of the pipes.
