if the valve covers look like these (bolt holes) then it is a 351m/ 400. the 351w uses a different bolt pattern!!
351w in a 73-77 (could tell by grille) F-350 Crew Cab DRW. Saw it in Richmond, VA about 3 years ago. It sat in front of a C6.
Since all Windsor blocks share the same pattern, which is different than the FE's, 335's, and 385's. Most windsors sat in front of C4s, which IMO is a better tranny than the C6. I think the only visible difference is that it is about 2 inches shorter than a C6. I would like to know how many gears they (C4) had and what the ratios were. I still don't think ford put 351Ws in 73-9 trucks I am pretty sure that they only put the 300I6, 352, 360, 390, 351M, 400, 429, and 460. I know that most of the 80's trucks came with a 302 or 351W.
Well, there is a VIN code for 302's (G) so they did put some kind of Windsor in the 73-79 Ford Trucks, in fact I have a 76 F-100 SWB with a 302, Dana 21 T-case (single speed), factory coded with a 302, sitting in my yard as a parts truck.
The junkyard expert at the place I saw the F-350 (as well as I) identified it as a 351W, and it sure looked stock, or someone stuck a stock 351w in a long time ago, with all factory equipment, filters, air cleaner and all. Ford is known for sticking in things that aren't supposed to be there in the 70's, it's possible they ran out of 351m's that day and just used what was available.
I just found out that ford did not put any kind of 351 Windsor motor in any truck from 73-9. They were used in trucks from 80-96. I know that they put a few 302's in them though.
