Black smoke

I'm looking for some help out there. I currently have a 2006 F350 Crew with the 6.0L. I have two problems that may be related that so far no one can diagnose and fix. My biggest problem is that occassionally when I start the truck and try to drive it, the truck shutters and blows thick black smoke. If I don't let up on the accellerator and allow the truck to idle, it will stall. It then won't start untill I let it sit for a few minutes. If I let it idle, it will continue to blow thick black smoke and shutter. I have to let it do this for a few minutes before it will give me any power and can be driven. Since 2007 I've had three turbo's, the EGR replaced, a fuel injector replaced and a fuel injector regulating module also replaced. The problem still persists. It doesn't happen often and seems to occur during colder weather. I have taken the truck to two different Ford dealers and a diesel only truck service center in my area. The second issue is ever since I purchased the truck in 2007 it tends to blow bluish smoke longer after start up then I notice on other Ford diesels with the 6.0L The places I mentioned above all say they don't see any indication of an oil leak. Everytime I have the oil changed I'm never low.

Black Smoke

Sorry to Hi-Jack your thread but I am having the same problems at start up when cold. It took about 8 to 10 times to start this morning and will fire for a few seconds and them die. Finally it lopes and spits and chokes and then belches black smoke for about a minute. Then everything smooths out and it will run fine for the day. I am getting codes for Injector Circuits Low on all of the injectors.
It only has 40,000 miles on it. I am goind to take it in to the dealer on Monday. I think it may be the FICM from all of the threads I have read. Batteries seem good although I haven't done a load test on them.
Will it cause any damage if i drive it until Monday?

The part in your post (Batteries seem good) will not cut it they need to be load tested weak or bad batteries will kill the FICM $300-$1100 what is the price of 2 new batteries about $220 check here

Agreed, Batteries and FICM. The FICM needs to be checked PRE-Start and Post start. they may be an initial drop after start up until the alternator kicks in but should not go below 41 volts. most programmers will read this automatically from the cab so as not to mess with pulling evrything out of the engine compartment to check it. Same issues on 2004 6.0 and just changing the batteries fixed the issue since one was dead the ficm was only getting about 28-35 volts post start up.

I would guess the black smoke is from an injector that is stuck open dumping fuel into one of your cylinders. Do you have any codes?

Turns out it was my FICM, but I was out of town when i couldn't get it started at all and it cost me $900.00. The tow was another $212.00.
Oh well, it's fixed now.
Thanks for the replies to my issues, hopefully Godfather1, you can get yours fixed without too much expense and or time.
Cheers

Do you still have the old FICM? If so i would be willing to take it off your hands.
