if by chance nobody has an AE scanner in your area.....a Superchips tuner will also pull codes. That's what I use, works great as a code reader, and also does a fine job as a paperweight
If there are absolutely no symptoms of the truck acting up other than the dash light, I'd say go ahead and stop by the auto parts stores for a free scan. The only reason I say this is because you're in California and likely have a GPCM instead of a GPR like most of the rest of us. If you've got a glow plug code, the free scan might pick it up.
I've heard in California they won't scan your veliches any more. Some new state law or something. Thats what autozone told my neighbor. This is for auto part places only, not dealers.
I have an f350 superduty 08 diesel the service engine soon light came on. It runs just fine. From what I am seeing I have to take it to a ford dealer, is that right

You don't have to take it to a Ford dealer. Anybody with AE that has been updated to new version in the last four years or any decent shop should be able to scan it for codes.
Post your location. Maybe there is an FTE member with a scantool close by who will volunteer to pull the codes.

What Robin said...click on the "B.E.S.T map" link in my signature, and post up location. If you are close to someone, I'm sure plans can get made.
