my buddy and i had a heated debate today on what kind of tranny fluid goes in my 96 bronco with the e4od (mind u he is a dodge guy, and he could be right but i have a feeling he isnt) he says i should use dex merc trans fluid. i dont have an owners manual on my truck, but i am thinkin its merc v. whos right here?! very interested considering im putting my built e4od in next week and would really enjoy putting the right trans fluid in it. tell me what u guys think, its a 96 ford bronco 5.8 MAF with the e4od.
What does the transmission dipstick have embossed in it? Ford was pretty good about delineating fluid type clearly on them. I've always run the best non-synthetic I can find. Swapping to synthetics after having had standard fluid for years tends to wash away things that help seal small leaks and keep gaskets tight. Modern fluid viscosities are nearly identical so the type is of less concern than it used to be. I honestly think Dex/Merc something or other IS the fluid type spec'd on the dipstick but don't hold me to that. I haven't looked in a while.
Mine came specced for Dexron II when it was new, as it was the standard for american cars in my country at the moment (i swapped to Dexron III later on). Since the rebuild i've been using Mercon V.
Wait! if you're using Mercon V be sure to flush the tranny before. Apparently mixing Mercon V and any older fluids makes the tranny break down faster. What i mean, if the tranny doesn't have Mercon V already, if it has, just refill whichever quantity is needed.
