So as I understand it there were two different ones in the 97 F150's... Can't remember the ID's but I'm curious as to what the difference is between them? Was it the valve body or were there several adjustments made in the overall design?
Here's why I ask. Mine is about done... shudders on shifting... I've got a buddy that's got one from a Mustang with 20k on it but it's the other ID tag. After gutting it and using my extension housing and shaft I shouldn't have a problem should I? If the valve body is the difference then I could simply use mine couldn't I?
I've checked it all out and the harness is the same and overall looks like a direct swap aside from having to gut it and get it all back in. This shouldn't be a problem as it will all be laid out in order and an assistant will be taking pictures of absolutely everything.
ALSO: What are the odds that I could take a manual trans out from behind a 4.2L and toss it in mine? It's at the local junkyard and complete. I just miss having a manual.
The chances of a transmission from a 4.2L bolting to your 4.6L are exactly zero. The bolt patterns are different.
When assembling a transmission it is more than photographing everything and putting it back the same way. There are several measurements that have to be taken and selective thickness washers to maintain the proper clearances. You can do it without these, but plan to do it again soon while replacing damaged parts.
okay that's understandable and thank you for the info. How about the differences in the two ID's? I still haven't found anything explaining the differences.
