Question driveline vibration

i got a couple questions about my ordeal here, i got a small vibration when i hit 65 thru 70 mph. but i notice that the yoke on my transfer case is wider and bigger then the yoke on my 9 inch rear end cause im in the process of changing out the u-joints and the u joint that goes to the tranfser case is of normal size and the rear has a universal type ujoint were one side is wide and the other is short to fit the smaller yoke, is that how its supposed to go? and my other question is, how do you balance the rear driveshaft?

thanks for any input

As long as the u-joints fit properly that shouldn't be an issue, as far as the drive shaft goes...take it to a driveline shop and they will be able to balance it for you at a minimal fee.

My last drive line vibration was caused by a u-joint throwing a cap.

My last .... well, every drive line vibration I can recall actually .... was a worn out universal joint. You take care of drive shafts, do not drop them, do not let them hang off a universal. Unless mishandled, drive shaft should rarely need rebalancing.

My last one was the rear universal in my '77 F-150 long bed 4x4. I replaced all three in the rear drive shaft at the same time. That vibration had been there quite awhile, I thought it was a bearing in the TC. But just like all the other times in cars and trucks past .... it was a universal.

I don't recall the rear universal being two different widths across the caps?

If you have a two piece rear driveshaft, you have a driveshaft center support composed of a large rubber support, bearing, bracket and shims. A worn bearing can cause a driveline vibration.

U-joints cup sizes: Some types are 1310's (small cups), some types are 1330's (large cups), one type is a combination of both 1310/1330's.

If you need a 1310/1330, it may be difficult to find: Ford part number: C5TZ-4635-F / Dana/Spicer number: 210392-X / Autoparts stores go by the Dana/Spicer number.
