I see no downside in running the hubs locked other than the reduction of fuel mileage AND the added "wear-and-tear" on the front axle assembly. After all, many 4WD vehicles were built without manual locking hubs for many years. When conditions get bad here I just lock the hubs of whatever vehicle my wife is driving before she leaves home...then she just shifts into 4H when needed. My wife fully knows about how to lock up the front end on all our vehicles (and to unlock when she reaches 2H conditions), but when I know she will need 4x4, why wait until she needs it before locking the hubs?
