Ya might want to post that on the FE forum. My thought it is a broken something not a clip.

Soooooo, where's the other half? If you are lucky, it is still holding the piston pin in place. If not, the pin maybe wearing into the cylinder wall.

Question
does the piston travel down far enough to let the retainer fall out ? i am thinking no
so how did this get there ?or are the retainers on the inside close to the rod ?

Well thats not good, like John already said thats a wrist pin retainer! I lost 3 of them from the improper install at machine shop. There is a rounded side and a square cut side and they must only go in one way. Good news my engine ran for almost 20,000 like that made a lot of smoke towards the end and ruined the block as it cut perfect lines deep into the walls but plan on a rebuild soon.

The broken half moon shaped piece could be the part of the wrist pin retainer clip, but peeps find all sorts of things in oil pans:

Old drain plugs, drain plug gaskets, engine oil dipstick tube o-rings, dizzy drive shafts, nuts and bolts.

Mike, take that piece to a motor rebuild/machine shop and see if they can match it up. I'm sure they can figure it out but I think you already know what it is.
