SLOPPY STEERING
You guys hit a homerun with my last issue, here is a new one. Drove my sons 79 F150 2 wheel drive (351) and the steering is really sloppy. In that you turn the wheel alot before the whells actually turn. Thought maybe tie-rods, but when I looked under the front end, I didn't see the tie-rods that I expected to see. Never owned a Ford till now, only Chevys, so I am not sure what part(s) need to be inspected and replaced to fix this. Thanks for any advice, and don't get on me to bad for always owning Chevys. just seemed like whenever I searched the classifieds when I needed a new work truck. Chevy was was the only choice. Ford guys must hold on to their trucks.

To fix my sloppy steering i first tried tightening down the worm gear screw on the steering gear as far as it would go. It helped a little but was so worn after 30+ years that eventually i had to replace the whole steering gear unit. That helped tremendously. Then I also found slop in the steering tie rod arm ball joints. After replacing those my truck rode straight and true. Also, after replacing all those parts i got it aligned. Highly recommend alignment after changing all those parts.
