Fuel Sending Unit

Hi my question is about the float on a fuel sending unit. The truck is a 85 f-350 which originally had a 460 with I think the hot fuel option. The rear tank sending unit show empty all the time, so I removed the sending unit and found the float was not attatched to the sender. My question is what holds the float rod, which is still on the float, in the turning part of the sender. The rod has a flat spot on it I thought might set in a slot in the hole in the sender but the sender appears smooth inside. Any help would be appreciated.

The rod is held in by a piece of plastic which acts as a pivot bushing. It essentially is bonded, so it should not have come out.

OK thanks. I found where it pivots and that part appears to work. When I rotate it the guage moves. I was just wondering if I was missing a clip or something that held the rod in it. Is there any way to glue the rod back in?

You probably could. Never done such, but it should work.
