Seriously thinking about this one.

thanks,
I don't know anything about the particular X, but if they're asking $10K, an initial offer of $8,500 would seem like a good start...

Seems like a fair deal. Test drive, test drive. Really check out the front end components. X's have some "wander issues" (search out on forum) and are hard on factory ball joints. So test drive and if any issues with front end stuff it gives you better leverage for offering less.
The wandering and ball joints all have fixes and especially if you are a little mechanically inclines can be fixed for good for under a $1000. Some have it some apparently don't notice but either way you'll love your X and cuss Ford for stopping production.

I bought 2000 limited V10 with 160k for $7000. Fair price. I went through it completely and replaced bushings, plugs, coils, etc. As well just finished suspension upgrades. New wheels and tires. Have about $11k in it now but feel confident I'll get another 100k out of it and it rides and drives excellent. So total investment for 100k miles I fell is excellent.

I've got an '01 Excursion V10

If you get the V10, I would check the axle codes. I've got the 3.73 and get between 13 and 14 mpg. I understand there are a few 4.10 V10's out there. I'd guess mileage would be a little worse on those.

I've done absolutely nothing to the engine on mine. I have however completely rebuilt the front end; ball joints, sway bar and link bushings, shocks. Go with Moog ball joints, they're much heavier than stock. Also aftermarket poly sway bar bushings. These tightened mine up and made it ride much better than new, even after over 200K miles.

I've always figured blow-by is a good indicator of engine wear. I change my oil, and it doesn't start getting black until almost 3,000 miles, and then I change it. I've got over 235K miles on mine. I think the engine is good for an easy 400K miles. I've heard you wear out the timing chain before the rings will go. Really like mine !!!

Hi ozarksboater,

Popular opinion seems to be to go with the MotorCraft ball joints on the X. The Moog tend to be too tight. I've got the Ford ball joints in my X, and the Moog in my F-150 and am extremely pleased with the handling of both.

How long have you had the Moog's?

About a year

I've had the Moogs a little over a year. You can tell they're heavier than stock. I personally think they made the whole front end a little more solid. I kept hearing in the f250 and f350 forums to go with the Moogs.

Not sure what you mean by too tight.
