Disc brake conversion pics/info needed

Anyone have any pics of 2wd disk brake conversions they have done? Only reason I ask is I got a steal on my spindles ($60), but they are not complete. Kind of had to take what I could get up here in rust country as many of these old trucks went the way of the crusher a long time ago. I checked 5 different yards within an hours drive, and this was the only set I could find.

I need to know what hardware I need to get besides the calipers. I did some looking through Rock Auto's website as they seem to have the best pictures.

Im seeing brake backing gasket, caliper bolt, hardware kit, spindle nut/washer, bearings, all stuff I would probably replace new as it isnt that expensive. I just need some input on what I need.

You might try the Master Power Brakes web site. I got my complete (minus brake lines) kit from them for a '66. My truck is in the deconstruct phase so I don't have any pix, but I did trial fit everything and it's fine - based on '73 - '79 Ford parts. They should be able to provide you with a list of everything you will need. Good luck.

Thanks. That in combination with a LMC catalog seems to have given me a general idea on what I need. I go to pick up the spindles next Tuesday, so I will know more then.

I got chastised by a few left coast do gooders know it alls but if you find and buy a 73-76 with FE 73-79 I6 donor you can get all the needed Ford engineered parts for far less money. I have done this several times, I have sold parts that I didn't need and my upgrades were -0- in cost.

FYI

I just went up to our local Advance Auto, told them I needed the calipers, rotors, and everything else associated with the conversion. Those items would be pads, lines, king bolts (with metal bushings) bearings, seals and figured while I had things apart I would change out the bushings for everything as well as all of the steering components.

Anyhow.....the calipers I bought came complete with all the necessary parts including and retaining clips and they were very reasonable in price....about 21.00 a piece including the core charge.

Now......if I was able to do it the way I wanted......I would have just bought an upgrade kit from a Mfgr like SSBC but I figured since the discs were an upgrade from what I had so I would just restrain myself since the budget (umm, err, uhh I mean my personal business manager) was ready to clean my clock.

Remember, you also need a combination valve as well as a disk brake master cylinder. John's advice to get a donor is definitely the way to go. You get every bracket, line, etc. that you need, plus power steering/brake components should you desire. Then sell off the rest of the parts you don't need and end up making money. I just picked up a 76 F100 with a running 390 and a rebuilt C6 for $150 simply because the guys wife was hounding him to get it out of the driveway. Of course I live out on the west coast where these deals are a dime a dozen.

Here is the article that is posted in FTE in articles/specs heading on what you need to do a swap from a donor. When I got my parts I paid $50 for everything. I used everything as cores that I could and replaced everything. All said and done I have $125-$150 into it. A lot cheaper than any kit with brackets plus you may have to use GM calipers and other parts. Hope the article helps. It is well written.

Joe, I hear ya.

I wanted to do that, but trying to find some of those parts around my neck of the woods, not gonna happen. They crush those trucks up here because they are worth alot just in steel. I had to look pretty hard just to find the spindles, and someone already beat me to the calipers and rotors on the donor truck. I think I will need to find a set of dust shields for the back side though, because from what the guy at the yard said, those are missing as well. The rest I can buy new. I would replace the calipers and rotors anyway, if I have to buy the shim kit, bolt, nut and keeper, then so be it. Only totals up to $15, which is not gonna break me.

I will keep in mind about the prop valve, because I know I need one. I was just going to put a new one in, mostly for simplicities sake. I know the yard will want $30 for the valve, and I can buy a new one for $50.

In short, Id love to find a donor truck, with the motor mounts, brakes, and everything in it. But they simply dont exist around here. Some parts need to be replaced new, just because they do need to be. Using rotors and calipers that were new in 1975 is not acceptable to me. Just replace the parts that need to be replaced, because that is the correct way to do it.

Corey, I have a saying that recently rang true to me again.

Turn over rocks and you will find what you are looking for, take your time, don't rush and what you are looking for will come to you.

I have been needing a 8ft ladder, new @ Depot $150.00, I have been searching Craigslist everyday for 11-12 weeks, found one $65.00 95% new. I am very happy.

There is a donor truck out there for you but you have to be diligent and patient.

Wasn't me that said use all parts, of course you replace the renewable parts.

Ditto on what John said....I use new rotors, bearings, seals, calipers, hoses, master cyl, booster, etc. when doing these swaps. Another side benefit to a donor is you have all the cores for the reman parts such as the calipers, booster (I don't use reman master cylinders), and even the steering gear. The $150 donor '76 I just bought had a rust free 64-66 styleside tailgate on it too. Didn't even realize that till I got it home.

Speaking of those idiots in California, I recently bought your typical brass, adjustable spray hose nozzle at the hardware store.

It is two pieces of machined BRASS!!, maybe there are a couple of "O" rings in it, nothing else.

ON THE PACKAGE it has a WARNING that sez: "This product contains materials known by the State of California to cause cancer."

Now come on, people, are you really that stupid? Get some sense!!

Don't you know that large exposures to brass will give you cancer, cancer of what, I don't know, but according to California if you quit breathing that will also give you cancer.
