my truck was making a terribly violent thudding noise while i was driving home the other night. it would do this if i gave it any acceleration, and it was even worse while i was turning. the whole truck would knock as if i somebody was rear ending me. i managed to limp home. this morning i took a look at it. i rolled back and forth to recreate the noise, and my buddy said it looked like the rear end was jerking around. i took the wheels off to find that i have a broken leaf spring on my drivers side.
heres one a little closer up:

would this cause the symptoms im having? i definitely have never noticed a broken leaf spring on this truck before. im going to replace both sides. my shackles/hangers arent bad so im not going to replace those. money is tight and i need the truck. it's undriveable like this. all other suggestions are appreciated. -thanks
I don't think that would cause you any unusual noises. It doesn't look like a fresh break(bare new metal) does it? I can't tell for sure from the pictures. I've been driving my '88 around for years with a broken rear leaf. Finally got the ones in my '94 replaced, had a broken leaf there too. Ford must have had a bad bunch of springs for years.
i agree, the metal doesnt look like its a fresh break. its just the only thing i could find that was out of the ordinary. everything in the rear end is tight, and i had the entire rear end re built over the summer, so i dont think its a differential or axel issue.
If nothing looks out if place on the outside it sounds like the rebuild let go on you.. I would check the spider gears for broken teeth. Being worse in turns leads me in this direction...
I had the same exact break on my 94 and it didn't cause any handling or noise problems. Check the shackles and perches, those are known to fail too. From what your saying it sounds like a differential issue.

the shackles and perches seem to be okay. i had the truck on jacks and i couldnt find anything with play in it. i would be very disappointed if my rebuild failed on me. i had it done professionally and it wasnt cheap, however my first thought was that this is a rear end problem. the guy that did it is about 10 miles away. i dont know if i can limp the truck that far.
well today i brought the truck over to the mechanic that rebuilt the rear end over the summer. im pretty freindly with the guy, so i hungout as he took off the diff cover. heres what we found:
you cant really see it in the pictures, but i circled the areas that are damaged. theres teeth chipped and missing on the gear in the top circle, and the gear in the bottom circle is rounded off bald. my mechanic suspects bad part quality or the wrong part was installed. however hes going to fix it for me either way. btw, what kind of rear end is this? LS or an open rear? i forgot to ask the mech.
I don't see an "S" spring in there. Looks like an open diff to me.
Were the spider gears replaced when the diff was rebuilt last time? It looks to me like something got caught in there (like a c-clip?) and chewed everything up.
yes, the spider gears were replaced when the rear end was rebuilt. im pretty sure every internal part was replaced. and i agree, it looks like something let loose and ruined everything else.
