I'm still wondering about my future mpg. I have 3.50 butt gears now, and getting a set of used 2.75's next week. Is it too far fetched to think I can get it up to 15mpg, when it gets 11 now?
Probably mostly just the gears, I get the same with a 4 bbl as I did with the 1 bbl so If he changes out his gears I think that would be the biggest improvement as far as mileage is concerned I have 3:73s and have never gotten better then 13 mpg.
500 is the smallest Edelbrock makes. I don't like Holley. You have to play with them to much. Edlebrock is a bolt on, couple of adjustments, and you're done. I check settings twice a year when the gas blends change winter and summer. I would have gone with the Powerjection III EFI but the DUI distributor I bought is not compatible with it.
Besides, compared to the cost of that Colorado I was driving, insurance, monthly payments, tags, repairs. I still come out way ahead money wise.
I have used an Autolite 4100, built by Pony Carbs (but you have to have a C type manifold to use one), and an Edelbrock 500. I also got the calibration kit for the Eddy and have tweaked it quite a bit to find the best setting. While I love the 'kick' of the primary boosters and then secondaries of the Eddy coming on, I will also say that the mpg of the Autolite (480 cfm, 1.08 venturi size, originally on a 289) was much better. In an effort to find a carb that would produce the 16 mpg average of the Autolite, but yet offer the booster thrill of the Eddy when needed, I am about to install a 750 cfm Q.jet. That's right, 750 cfm, on a 300!
Let me explain: The Q.J. has tiny primaries and triple venturi in each pri. bore. This causes the mix to travel with great velocity and fuel is better ripped apart into vapor. That creates tremendous throttle response too. The Q.J. is what helped GM v8's to achieve good mpg yet good performance too.
The interesting thing about the Q.J. is that they are a variable cfm carb! GM put the 750 cfm on everything from small v8's to 500 ci v8's. Because of the adjustable secondary air flap the carb will never give the engine more mix than it can use.
It is a very complicated carb though, and a lack of know-how led to a lot of negative press.
QJ's are nice as long as you keep your foot out of them. The PowerJection III is a 750cfm but the computer turns it down for the 300. I was on the phone every other day for 3 weeks try to make it work with my DUI so I know a 750 is ok. I also use the DP manifold so that limits me a little. But with my 2.47 gear and OD I get good mileage on the highway.
I have 6500 miles on it now and problems have been very minor. I know it can run better so now that I'm sure everything is running good I'll start looking around. I haven't been to Pony Carbs in a long time. I need to look at Autolite again. Small 4bbl carbs are just few.
