Hey guys, long time listener first time caller. Just kidding, but it has been awhile! Work and family life has been a little crazy latley, but all is well and hopefully I can find a little more time to post.
Okay back on topic now!
I have been thinking of doing a disc brake conversion for along time now and now that I have a cracked drum it is giving me an excuse. My questions are as follows:
1. For those of you that have done it roughly what did it cost you?
2. With my truck being an auto how important is the emergency brake? I never use it because it does not work properly now!!
3. Do I need to run a proportioning block or distrubution bock?
4. How much would I benefit from adding hydroboost?
5. Is there a kit out there that you would recomend or part numbers that you could provide me?
The brackets that I have been looking at use front rotors off of a ford van and calipers off of the front of a 3/4 ton chevy 4x4. So that means no emergency brake. The brackets are priced at $50.00.
Thanks in advance for any info that you can give me.

I have been thinking of doing a disc brake conversion for along time now and now that I have a cracked drum it is giving me an excuse. My questions are as follows:
1. For those of you that have done it roughly what did it cost you? $250 or so with Chevy calipers $500 with Super Duty calipers
2. With my truck being an auto how important is the emergency brake? I never use it because it does not work properly now!! I also have an auto with no parking brake. I would never use it except in emergency and even with rear disc it wouldn't work in an emergency
3. Do I need to run a proportioning block or distrubution bock? No
4. How much would I benefit from adding hydroboost? No experience here but it would be a good thing for sure!
5. Is there a kit out there that you would recomend or part numbers that you could provide me?

TJ, thanks for the info. I will probably run the chevy calipers. Is there any real benefit to the super duty calipers? I am also going to look into the hydroboost. If I have enough cash. Will one off of a f-superduty from our years work?

The SD calipers offer more braking power. They also can have a parking brake added with a little modification.
I used TSM MFG. CO., INC.. More expensive then mentioned though. I got the calipers with the emergency brake brackets. Never regreted putting them on. For years now I've considered hydroboost, maybe one of these days.
I think it's been discussed before, but what about using brake parts off an E series van? I think in 99 they went to rear disc but still kept the 8x6.5" bolt pattern unlike the F series.
Superduty4x4
That is a good thought. I may have to look into that but I am just not sure how important an e-brake is?
What all do I need to do hydroboost or is there a good thread on it. I need to price it because I would like to do it but I don't know how much my wallet wants too. Thanks for all the responses guys.
The Chevy calipers(w/ e-brake) shouldn't be terribly expensive and should work decent(assuming this is what Glenn's using). A little e-brake adapter and your good to go. Seems easier than building brackets and stuff for the SD calipers, but the SD calipers might be better than the Chevy calipers. Not sure.
Eldorado pads were a little hard to find when I was looking for pads. I still haven't looked at the web site to be sure. They also aren't any fun bleeding, gravity bleed them and finally they were good.
TSM would use the Eldo calipers like these. This is a typical price in the link. BUT Most parts store calipers don't come with the lever and bracket on the caliper fo rthe parking brake. New Lg GM Rear Calipers
