I have a 2001 f250 4x4 with the 5.4l. Truck has 135,000 mi. My transmission has started to slip at high rpm. It feels like there is no power at high rpm. It also shudders ever so slightly when starting quickly from a stop. It's definitely not shifting hard. If anything, when I floor the gas it seems to hold the gear too long and then has a very soft/sloppy shift. Is the transmission done? Could it simply be the torque converter? I looked at the fluid on the dip stick and it's not low and looks red and not brown. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.
Also, I have a free e4od from a 96 f250 with only 36,000 mi available. Can I swap? If so, should I?
The shudder from a start is probably a U-joint. No power at high RPM is usually a fuel starvation problem. Often a dirty fuel filter or a weak fuel pump, sometimes even a dirty air filter.
I forgot to mention that I changed the fuel and air filters last night after work. I had the same thought. No change. Also, the revs keep climbing when I give the truck more gas, it just doesnt seem to be translating to more speed. I bought new u-joints. I'll install tonight. Anyone know what to look for as far as fuel pressure if I hook up a gauge? If it is the pump, would I hear it making noise? A week or two ago I thought I was starting to hear some light whining noise only at part to full throttle. Initially I thought rear end or u-joint but I was confused by the fact that it seemed to go away when I was off throttle. Thanks for the help.
