We are looking at trading our 01 Explorer Sport trac (straight across) for a 2000 4x4 F-150 with the 5.4 Triton V8 and auto trans. The truck also has a 10.25 rear end in it. Other than that its stock. Owner claims to have changed the tranny fluid in it every year and a half, and when I checked the fluid it was clean. Runs great... BUT when I drove the truck, at 1/2-3/4 throttle it was shifting at 3200-4000RPM... Is that right for a V8? I know that's ok for a V6... Besides being a little high in my view, the shifts were fine. Truck has 130,000mi on it. Besides the shift points it drove near perfect. Also, how long are these tranny's known to last? (I beleive its the 4R100... right?)
The reason we are trading is because we are woried the trans will go out in ours... fluid is BLACK BLACK BLACK and BURNT... NEVER been changed and is at 129,000mi. My dad never kept up on the maintanence, which includeds 20 thousand mile oil changes... I won't let him do that with a new truck! We can't afford any problems, so we need something that will last.
Please respond quickly as if we do the trade it would be tomorrow most likely.
I have an 02 with the 4r70w trans and if that's where it shifts that's where it shifts. I do believe mine is in the same rpm range when i have the gas pedal mashed to the floor though to answer your question.
what's the justification on the 10.25 rear end on an f150? those are for the super duties?

I guess the previous owner wanted a stronger rear end? The current owner bought it like that.
It was shifting there NOT mashed to the floor... which makes me wonder if the tranny is going to have issues...
Then again i have a shift kit installed which doesn't change the shift points just the shift firmness. If he said it was bone stock besides the rear end is it possible that the owner before him put a tuner on the vehicle and didn't remove it.

Where would the tuner be? Or how would I know it's got one... I'm not familure with them at all lol. He did say the previous owner was an old man, so it's doubtfull it would have a tuner.
it's something you plug into the diagnostics plug beneath the dash. there probably isn't one on there if the owner now didn't put one on there and the previous owner was an elderly feller. someone else will soon chime in on this then. I just tipped over 120000miles and my tranny is still good just to throw that out there. theres many of these trucks out there with 200000+ miles still original tranny and motor.
i just bought a 2000 f150 4x4 with the 5.4L with 108K miles. i can get to about 55 and cruise barely getting over 2000RPM at any point and easily get to 45 without hitting 2K. it cruises around 1200RPM. i know it was used to tow a horse trailer for part of its life so it hasnt been babied. i hope this helps.....

The gearing in the truck we looked at is clearly much differnet then, because crusing in O/D at 65-70 was just above 2000RPMS
