I have a 73 F250 Highboy 4x4 with a manual steering gear. It seems that some time back I read on this site where this could be converted to the later model 78-79 power steering.
Has anyone here done this or know enough about it to walk me through this conversion? I found an F150 at the local wreckers that has all the parts still on it if it would work for a 3/4 ton.
Will I need to do some welding and fabricating to the frame to adapt the latter box?
I've had this truck for 18 years now but as I get older I think that reliable power steering for it would be nice for the next 18 years!
There is a lot of information on this site about how to do this coversion. Just do a search and you will find all that you need. I did this on my 74' earlier this year and used the box from a 78' F250 and had to have new hydraulic lines made. Yes you will need to notch the frame rail and the crossmember to make it fit. A plasma cutter and welder (and some patience) are all that you need.
One thing I found while searching this subject is that I wish I would have had the drag link to mount up during mock up so the right amount of material was removed from CM. Just would have made life simpler.
