just bought my 77 ford, been looking foreever.it has an 429 thunder jet engine w/3-sp autu HURSTshift on floor.i need to remove this GASHOG and am replacing with an 302 from a new mustang.are these 429 engines worth keeping?i was thinking about a rebuild, but gas prices are well, you know.anything thing i can do to be able to drive with 429?without pulling holley carb?
429 is worth keeping if you ever want something with lots of power lol. Any idea what kind of mileage you are getting with it? I'm guessing with a well tuned 302 in one of these trucks you can get about 15-16 mpg maybe, as long as you dont make it work, then I predict your mileage will go to crap, 302s IMO arent well suited for truck work.
"Fleetside"? Eeeegads... that's Bowtie-speak! It's Flaresides and Stylesides
2X with Bama150... a 302 isn't, in my opinion, suited for these relatively heavy trucks. Lose another 1,000 pounds and then the HP to weight ratio gets better. Also, keep in mind the auto industry went from gross HP to net HP measurements sometime in the early 70s.
Good try Nothercrash!

I just noticed you are in the mountains. That 302 may suck down gas just as bad as your 429 and have no power to boot on those long grades, you may want to reconsider keeping that big block, just a thought. Back in the late 80s, a guy I worked for took his family out west in a rented lincoln town car with a 302 iirc, he was a dyed in the wool gm man too. I asked him how he liked it he said it was a good riding car and mpg was excellent on the flatlands but as soon as he got into the hills he said mpg nosedived.
429 2V Thunder-Jet: Same applications as above, except Thunderbirds.
going to clean off back of block tomorrow, try to get engine #.pretty much sure not an 360.never seen factory traction bars, before?are they, really.
i sure appreciate everyones help.joining up tomorrow too.talk too ya.removed the old wood bed today.WOW
DID NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT GOIN OER THE MOUNTAINS.REALLY LEANING TO KEEP 429,KNOW MORE TOMORROW,THANKS.I BET THE 302 WOULD DRINK JUST AS MUCH,I HAVE A VERY BIG FOOT
