429 v8

I'm putting a 73 429 in my 77 f100, it has a stock rear axle off of a 78 f150, and 31x10.50x15 tires, should i expect a ton of get up and go outt of this engine in my truck? and also what kind of top speed is it going to have?

sure about that?? i could only gett to around 70 with that old tired 302, she was worn out!!

The '73 was a smogger. I would not expect much without a few minor alterations. I just posted a group of links to making a 460 purr. The 429 is the exact same engine except for stroke. You can find those links here.

I appreciatcha! and also, i totally agree with the whole hood raising when you hit the gas part i also read that resetting the timing gear or something was an easy hp gainer? its retarted or something?

nevermind i found a link on that 460 forum about it, but when it talks about desmogging and getting rid of the egr, its talking about removing air injection tubes and clogging them, is there anyway you could post some pics of how to do that?? i have no clue what any of that is

I replaced the 302 in Pop's Truck with a 460, which like was stated above, is the same engine with a different stroke. I have a ton of pics in my build thread which has a link in my sig if you would like to have some reference photos. Good luck!

was it stock 460 when you put it in? was it a HUGE difference?

That 1 would work just fine. You want the crank set at 0 when you do it. I posted a link in the other thread to a gear drive setup that I am going to use in place of my timing set.

yeahh sounds good man, how much gain should i get from the timing chain alone? and what about all that egr stuff?

I haven't cranked it yet. But no, it is far from stock. The double roller timing chain is a simple addition that many people have said makes a noticeable difference. If you don't mind yanking the water pump, it shouldn't take more than a few hours. I used a Lunati setup, but Ford Racing makes a nice one too.

You will see a 1" plate below the carb that the EGR is attached to. Replace that spacer with a 1" spacer from someone like Mr. Gasket. The smog tubes go into the back of the heads. You can cut the tubes off & weld them shut or if you pull the heads you can take them out completely, tap the holes & plug them. If I were you I would search out a set of C8, C9 or D0 heads & just swap them on to your block.

talking about the thing that looks like the vacuum advance on the distributor,coming off the back of that spacer? is mr. gasket a website? and yeah ive been searching for a set of heads, to no avail, so ill just do the egr and the timing for now, and is their a kit for recurving the distributor?

Yes I think it is also Mr. Gasket who makes the curve kit which is just 2 springs. I paid less than $7. If you pull the carb off the next piece under the carb is the EGR spacer. I am confident Mr. Gasket has a website. I bought my spacer from Advance Auto for $18. I bought the recurve kit from a local speed shop. I got my heads from Pull A Part. They were $34 each. I would do some homework on the cam before going into it. The cam I am going to buy wants 4* advanced. You might get even more power from retiming the stock cam to 4* advanced. The 460 site should be of service with info about that. Those guys really know their stuff. Bottom line is if you simply recurve the distributor, put in an early timing set just to bring the cam to 0 & the carb spacer you will notice a big difference in how it runs. If you can find a 750 cfm vac secondaries carb you can expect even more. The exhaust is the weak side of the engine. Headers (prefer 1 7/8" primaries but 1 3/4" will do) & a low restriction exhaust will help greatly. Porting the heads can get you up to 80 hp. There is so much power just sitting there in the engine waiting to be let loose. Seems like anything I do makes it run even better. My wife had drove our truck with the 302 which moved it down the road fairly well. The 1st time she drove the truck with the 460 in it after I did some work on it she was talking to a friend. Her description of the truck was "Oh my f&^%*&g God!". Tonight she said we will be needing to buy wheelie bars before long.
