It's time to replace my 14 year old chassis exit headers. I'm looking at using fender well exit. What are the pros and cons on this type header?
79 F-150,400,T-18.
Pros would be ease of exhaust routing, better starter access, cool factor. Cons, a little inner fender trimming..that's all I can think of. Maybe someone has had some bad luck with them but the people I know that have gone to them say they wouldn't go back.
I have a least one picture in my 78 gallery of mine. They are the L&L coated fenderwell exit headers. They still get pretty hot, I'm still considering wrapping them some in the engine compartment. There is some wiring on the driver side that runs under the cab that worries me. Very good construction, and exhaust is a breeze. I can try to get some more pics and upload them from my 56K dial-up. Be patient. Haha. You do need to have the engine out to install them.
No more fighting to get exhaust around the xmsn cross member. Cheaper and easier exhaust system all together. Their will be some more input on where to locate from folks on here.
Get the heating element, for the most part outa the eng compartment. I have no 2wd fenderwell experience, but I will NEVER have chassis exits on a 4x4 again.
No more cracked exhaust manifolds, a little help in the power dept.
fenderwell exit 351m/400 #89360 headman headers. 562-921-0404 ask for lee in tech if any questions. Was just talkin to him this morning on these fenderwell headers. tell lee robert from wyoming sent you!! They are 1.625 ports and long tube setup. Great for around 400hrspwr and down engines and towing applications. Yes I run bigblock fenderwell headers also for over 20yrs L and L headers. No regrets, easier on starters and working around tranny/transfer. run a good exhaust gskt not PAPER! paper will blow out and have to do it over again for sure. also once you install new headers get hot and then retorque again once they cool down. don't wait a week to retorque same day or the next day! they move around a little and a retorque is required with any header, my personal experience. On the headman headers will need to put a good header paint on or powder coat or something better than the black paint thats on them!
Your starter life goes way up compared to chasis exit. hardly have any problems with starter anymore. headers cook in the mud and thats just not a good thing.
will thoes headers (89360 headman headers) fit my 460 and i do not have a lifted 4x4 will they still work in my truck i do not mind re-routing my brake lines if need be, Ill more than likely wrap them in headerwrap also...
