I have a 73 f-350 and i have recently replaced the battery, alt, and voltage regulator. Im not sure what the issue is but to start with about a week ago the radio light and dash lights started pulsing and when i turned off the truck it wouldnt restart without being jumpped. Since then I put a new alt. on it and was still having the problems with it having to be jumpped every time i wanted to start it, and the next day put a new voltage regulator in and still having the same issue. I have tested all the wire conections with a test light and seem to have power going through them. So have any of you had this issue and what can be the fix for it to make it start under its own power.
At Montana Highboy
i have a aftermarket sterio, aux plug and fog lights but all are protected by fuses they have been there a while and just started having issue.
Not sure if i have a bad ground or have my alt hooked up wrong, i have 2 wires going to the alt one heavy guage which is the bat and a small guage and im not sure if i got the small guage one right or not
A test light is not a very good voltage/current test tool. I highly recommend using a multimeter. A test light only shows you if you are getting voltage. High current draw issues(like a bad ground to a starter) are not easily found with a test light.
On my engine, i had a ground strap from the top firewall to the top rear of the engine. It was flexible mesh metal and worn and corroded. I replaced it with 0 gauge wire and copper terminal ends.
Another spot to look at is corrosion/oxidation on the battery terminals, battery terminal lead clips, every stud and wire and nut on the starter solenoid.
ok i found the back ground strap and it had come disconnected so i remounted it to the bracket thats held on with 2 bolts behind the carb that holds the spring for the accelerator i dont know if thats a good place to mount it but its on the engine block. However i am still having the same problem. i noticed that the alt. is getting hot and i dont recall that ever happening, but i dont think its suppose to. and it will also run forever untill i turn the headlights on then they start to dim and then the truck dies. i still have to jump it to get it to start and if i start it and let it run for a while without the lights or anything on when i turn it off i still have to jump it to restart. if anyone has any futher thoughts or any thing else i should try please let me know because its about to find its self at the bottom of a clif and then blown up.
